BMI... bollocks?

BMI is bollocks though… isn’t it?

Nope. It works for the average person. Do you know who’s average? Most people.

Body Mass Index is an imperfect tool. The formula originated in the 1800s as a way of measuring a population. It uses height and weight to give an approximation of total body fat. The amount of excess fat you carry directly relates to your risk of heart disease, type 2 diabetes, stroke and some forms of cancer.

The reason BMI is so widely used is due to its simplicity. However, on an individual basis, it does run into some issues. Number 1 being that it doesn’t account for muscle mass. If you’re particularly muscular, you might be classed as overweight (guilty) or obese.

With today’s perceptions, you will be surprised how small ‘obese’ looks.

For some people, BMI can be the wake-up call that they need. (Link to NHS BMI calculator: https://www.nhs.uk/live-well/healthy-weight/bmi-calculator/#check-your-bmi )

If you’re a finely tuned athletic machine, you can probably ignore BMI safely.

But if you’re a normal person,

Living a normal life, Average wife / husband, Average children, Basically… adult versions of The Inbetweeners.

You need to take it seriously.

You bumder.
